Local Anesthesia

This course provides a comprehensive background for the participant to be able to administer local anesthetics in a safe and effective manner for pain control. The participant will complete the 15 didactic hours and 14 hours of laboratory/clinical experience mandated by Michigan Law. Laboratory/clinical experience include demonstrations, practice and evaluation of local anesthesia techniques including field infiltration and nerve block anesthesia.

Day 1

  • Laws, NERB Exam, Rules, & Regulations
  • Armamentarium, assembly and infection control issues
  • Anatomy
  • Injection Techniques

Day 2

  • Injection Techniques
  • Theory of Pain Control
  • Psychological Aspect of Pain Control and Selection of Pain Control Modalities
  • Neurophysiology
  • Pharmacology of Local Anesthesia & Vasoconstrictors
  • Infection Control

Day 3

  • Injection Techniques
  • Local Complications
  • Pharmacology of Local Anesthesia & Vasoconstrictors
  • Systemic Complications

Day 4

  • Injection Techniques
  • Local Anesthesia Medical Emergencies

Students will practice injections on each other in the afternoon sessions. Participants must provide a medical history and sign consent form on the first day of class. Clinical attire and safety glasses are required.
