Health Information Technology

Start training today for what is now one of the fastest growing fields in the information technology job market
At this time, applications are being collected for interest only purposes. Potential candidates will be notified when future classes are scheduled.
With Delta College’s Health Information Technology (HIT) program you can start anytime, study online and complete in six months. There are three training tracks to match your goals. And, best of all there are partial scholarships still available. This program will provide you with the skills, confidence and connections to thrive in the health information technology field.
Studies indicate that as many as 50,000 additional HIT professionals may be needed over the next five years. This is because reliance on electronic health records is increasing rapidly due to market and regulatory changes in the health care system; including implementation of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH Act).
Delta College is a member of the Midwest Community College Health Information Technology Consortium, which provides training in five work force roles to support electronic health records implementation across 10 Midwestern states through campus-based training, distance learning and connections with employer partners. The consortium will recruit and train a minimum of 2,700 health career and information technology professionals and students annually, to assist them in becoming health information technology (HIT) professionals.
As part of this initiative, Delta College is planning to train 300 health career and information technology professionals over two years in the three workforce roles listed below.
Three Training Pathways for Critical Roles
Each of these six-month programs is online and the program curriculum will focus on job-specific training for workforce roles in the field of health informatics:
Clinician-Practitioner
Implementation Manager
Technical Software Support

Delta's Commitment
- Programs will be designed to ensure that all required courses can be completed within six months.
- We will utilize an open enrollment system – allowing for the start of a course when a minimum number of students are academically prepared or have met required prerequisite skills/courses.
- It will not be limited by a semester or quarter system.
- We will utilize existing institutional academic support services to provide standardized, non-degree certificates of completion. The program provides short-term training in specific roles that will support the implementation of electronic health records and is not meant to be an overall training program for HIT certification.
- As participating schools partner with employers such as health care facilities, physician offices and software/service vendors, people who complete the program successfully will have a clear path and streamlined access to local, community-based job opportunities.
- We will build on existing skills for target audiences – by leveraging students’ previous professional experience and allowing them to “test out” of certain modules. This program will be guided by the principles of accessibility and flexibility, which will be addressed by offering both campus-based and distance education courses, providing evening and weekend scheduling, maintaining low course costs, and making financial assistance available to students who qualify.
- Job placement services will be provided to each participant who completes the training, although job placement is not guaranteed.
