Train to be a Caregiver

International Longevity Center
Community College Caregiver Training Initiative

The Community College Caregiver Training initiative is housed within The Caregiving Project for Older Americans, a joint collaboration of the International Longevity Center-USA and the Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education. The Caregiving Project for Older Americans is an action-oriented collaboration that aims to improve the nation’s caregiving workforce through training, the establishment of standards, and the creation of a career ladder.  This initiative is generously supported through the MetLife Foundation.  In 2010 Delta College was among 13 community colleges to win awards for innovative caregiving training from the International Longevity Center and the MetLife Foundation

In order to institute this training, Delta College LifeLong Learning will offer two training courses: National Caregiver Training Program and Personal Care Attendant beginning in May 2011.

  • The National Caregiver Training Program is designed to provide caregivers with the basic skills, knowledge and awareness for the non-paid in-home caregiver, family member or volunteer who needs to provide a safe, healthy and supportive environment for a loved one.
  • The Personal Care Attendant Program is designed as a short-term, job skill training program for in-home or institutional caregiver jobs; also providing a career ladder to a CNA, LPN/ RN or other health occupation programs offered at Delta College.

Our mission is to raise the Great Lakes Bay Area’s awareness of the critical need for caregiver training and the central role that community colleges can provide in this training. Scholarships are available for both the National Caregiver Training Program and the Personal Care Attendant Program.*
