Theory and Pedagogy of Learning Communities

Usually offered Winter Semester as an on-line course.
Designed for faculty, future teachers, staff and administration, this class will examine learning communities theories and models. Participants will:
- Compare, contrast, and evaluate various definitions, models, and conceptual frameworks of learning communities
- Design a learning community
Who might want to consider such a class?
- Those who have heard of learning communities but are not sure what this kind of teaching and learning entails.
- Those currently teaching in learning communities who want to add to their professional development in this area.
- Those who have taught in a learning community in the past and might want to renew their interest.
- Those looking for a stimulating professional development experience that includes class credit.
- Teams of faculty who have discussed teaching learning communities together in the past but have not found the planning time.
- Future teachers interested in modes of instruction beyond the ordinary education course requirements.
- Those in a position to support learning communities and assure students a greater range of choices for fulfilling their degree requirements.
- Those currently teaching K-12 who would like to explore interdisciplinary and team teaching.
