Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to join us on an adventure to France, Netherlands, and Belgium. We will visit traditional tourist destinations and learn about the biological aspects of these diverse environments. The course will be taught by Professor Jay Vanhouten of Delta College. Local guides will also be used to enhance the programs as you travel through three distinct areas of Europe. You may enroll in BIO 268: International Field Studies for 2 credits, or if you would like, you may pay only for the trip! There are no prerequisites for the course, but previous science courses and/or an interest in biology would be helpful.
Sites to be visited include the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Versailles Palace & Gardens, Notre Dame Cathedral, Caen Memorial, American Cemetery at Colleville, Normandy Beaches, Pointe du Hoc, Rouen Cathedral, Somme Battlefields, and Anne Frank's House.
Day 1: Overnight flight to Paris, departing from Detroit (bus from Delta)
Day 2: Arrival in Paris, walking tour of city, overnight in Paris
Day 3: Guided city tour of Versailles and free time in the afternoon to explore Paris on your own
Day 4: Transfer to Normandy for guided sightseeing of D-day sites, American Cemetery, Caen, Pointe du Hoc, overnight in Normandy region of France.
Day 5: Travel to Bruges region of Belgium, Somme battlefields area, overnight in Bruges
Day 6: Guided site seeing of Bruges, free time to explore the area, overnight, dinner on your own
Day 7: Transfer to Amsterdam, guided site seeing of the city, visit the famous Anne Frank house, overnight in Amsterdam
Day 8: Excursion to Arnhem, overnight in Amsterdam
Day 9: Free day in Amsterdam and overnight in Amsterdam
Day 10: Transfer to airport for departure to U.S.
The approximate total cost is $3,026 per person, an optional $240 rooming supplement (age 30+), and Delta tuition if taken for credit. Tuition and fees are at the regular Delta rate for 2 credits (if desired). Total cost includes:
- Faculty and local guides
- Round trip airfare
- Transfers between airport/hotel/destination cities (as per program itinerary)
- Overnight in hotels with private bathrooms
- Daily continental breakfast and dinner on days 2, 4 & 7
Not included in the program fee: Customary gratuities for your tour director, local guide and driver, porterage, personal insurance, beverages and lunches, dinner days 3, 5-6 & 8-9, public transportation to free time activities.
Note: Passports are required for all U.S. citizens and need to be valid for at least 6 months after return to the U.S. Some lodging locations may change prior to departure date.
