"Blarney and Beyond"
Yvonne Healy, storyteller
Presentation from 10 - 11:15am in the Lecture Theater (G160)
Q & A from 11:15am - noon in the Lecture Theater (G160)

Yvonne Healy is a Born Storyteller!
She didn’t kiss the Blarney Stone; she swallowed it. This award-winning raconteur was born across the water. She grew up with Irish stories and language on an American Main Street. Rollicking kids’ tales, weird Celtic legends, outrageous family lore, or thought-provoking adult fare: whether it’s blarney or beyond, this American and Irish storyteller opens windows to life, as real and touching as it gets. Funny, too!

The 400 Blows  film
2pm - 5pm in S105

The 400 Blows is a 1959 film directed by Francois Truffaut. A young Parisian boy, Antoine Doinel, neglected by his derelict parents, skips school, sneaks into movies, runs away from home, steals things, and tries (disastrously) to return them. Like most kids, he gets into more trouble for things he thinks are right than for his actual trespasses. Unlike most kids, he gets whacked with the big stick. He inhabits a Paris of dingy flats, seedy arcades, abandoned factories, and workaday streets, a city that seems big and full of possibilities only to a child's eye.

"Mental Health from a European Perspective: Same or Different from the United States?"
Presented by Carla J. Groh, PhD, PMHNP-BC
1 - 2:30pm in N008

The purpose of this presentation is to compare and contrast the delivery of mental health from the perspective of two European countries (Iceland and Ireland) and the United States. Although Iceland and Ireland share European roots, the mental health delivery systems are quite divergent. In recent years, both Iceland and Ireland have experienced catastropic economic crises; the impact of the economic downturn on the mental health network of each country and their ability to provide comprehensive mental health services will be explored.

In addition, similarities and differences between the three countries will be examined in terms of (1) common mental disorders (2) population-based risk factors; (3) barriers to assessment and treatment; and (4) how mental disorders are viewed within the three distinct cultures.
