Mission

Delta College’s Developmental Education Program welcomes our community’s learners. We are committed to:

  • Offering each student a quality Delta College Experience.
  • Ensuring collaboration / coordination between college services and curriculum to facilitate student success.
  • Assisting each learner in achieving individual educational goals.
  • Continually assessing our progress and successes, opportunities and goals.
  • Providing quality educational experiences for all Delta students, faculty, and staff.

Awards

NADE Certification

At the 2013 National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) national conference in Denver, Delta College was presented with a plaque which states, “The Developmental Education Program at Delta College has achieved Advanced Certification for its Developmental Coursework Program in English and Mathematics from the National Association of Developmental Education.” This certification was spearheaded by Mary Beth Looby and took approximately five years of work to attain. Our certification lasts until 2020, and we are one of only 24 colleges to have achieved advanced certification in the nation.

Awards by Year 

 

2014:

Delta College Developmental Education Director Alexandros M. Goudas presented with Outstanding Article Award by the Journal of Developmental Education, Volume 36, 2012-2013. Goudas was lead author in an article entitled, "Addressing Flawed Research in Developmental Education" (2012), and his co-author was Dr. Hunter R. Boylan of the National Center for Developmental Education.

2012:

John Champaign Memorial Award for Outstanding Developmental Education Program from the National Association for Developmental Education. Evaluation criteria for the award include the following: recognized program quality by peers and campus administrators, quality service to students, and demonstrated effectiveness through achievement of objective criteria.

2011:

Delta Developmental Education Director Mary Beth Looby named Michigan Developmental Education Consortium’s Outstanding Educator for 2011; she also received Delta’s Spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Award for her work with the community and at-risk students.

2010:

Robert DeVinney Endowed Teaching Chair from Delta College to pilot a Foundations program.

President’s Innovation Incubator Grant from Delta College to develop Moving Up program.

2009: 

Delta College hosted an April 2009 meeting of our “Showcasing” project mentor-mentee cohort and an October 2009 final meeting of all the project participants.

Developmental Education Director Mary Beth Looby was named the Carnegie/ Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) 2009 Professor of the Year for Michigan.

2008:

Sungard Endowed Teaching Chair at Delta College to develop integrated studies learning communities (ISLCs) with developmental courses.

Participated in Department of Education national grant project “Showcasing and Replicating Community College Programs.” DECOOR Team members visited Skagit Valley Community College and Pasadena Community College to develop ISLCs and other support programs.
