Motorcycle Safety Program
Motorcycle Safety Training is complete for the season. We will resume our schedule in Spring 2009. We will post the 2009 schedule and announce the registration start date after the first of the year.
Cost: $25
Delta College is sponsoring a Motorcycle Safety Program for beginning and experienced riders. These courses are presented in conjunction with the Michigan Secretary of State Office during 2008.
The Novice Course is required for anyone who wishes to obtain a motorcycle endorsement who:
- Has failed the motorcycle riding skill test twice or
- Is under 18 years of age (you must be at least 15 years old with a driving permit).
- This course is designed for riders with little or no riding experience, but who wish to become familiar with motorcycle rules and regulations, and develop skills to become confident riders.
Upon successful completion of this course, the Secretary of State Office may waive the motorcycle riding skill test prior to issuing a motorcycle endorsement. Applicants must still pass the Secretary of State written exam. This course has also been a great benefit to more experienced riders who have never had any formal training.
Novice Weekend Classes:
This class is very intensive. Novice weekend classes are the most physically and mentally demanding novice format. All weekend courses meet from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Friday night and 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Students must be able to ride a bicycle. Motorcycles are provided by Delta College.
Novice Weeknight Classes:
This class meets from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (unless otherwise noted). Motorcycles are provided by Delta College.
Novice Weekday Classes:
This class meets from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Motorcycles are provided by Delta College.
Motorcycle Experienced Rider Classes:
This class is designed for experienced riders who possess a motorcycle endorsement, and they must also provide their own motorcycle with a current registration and proof of insurance. This class meets from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for one day only. The rider must be physically capable of riding a motorcycle to the training site and successfully achieve control at low speed to stay in the class. The instructor is responsible for making this determination. If the instructor determines the rider's skills are not adequate, the rider will not be able to continue with the class and must register and pay for a different class. THIS CLASS IS NOT A WAIVER CLASS FOR CYCLE ENDORSEMENT PURPOSES.
Location Information:
The motorcycle courses conducted at Delta College begin with classroom discussion. Range activities occur in the Delta College Northwest Parking Lot.
Required Course Materials: (Bring to first day of class)
- Long sleeve jacket or heavy shirt, arms must be covered while riding, the outer-most layer must have long sleeves;
- Helmet (D.O.T. approved);
- Eye protection (goggles or glasses - clear goggles, glasses or face shields only);
- Gloves (any full-finger leather gloves will do);
- Long pants only - no shorts (suggest jeans because man-made materials will melt when exposed to the heat from engines or exhaust pipes);
- Boots (your ankle must be covered - a leather boot with a six inch top is fine, no high heels or high top tennis shoes permitted);
- Training manual must be brought to each class session. (The manual will be provided the first evening of your class.)
Registration:
Payment must be received at the time of registration.
The course fee is $25.00 per person. This fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. A confirmation letter will be mailed to you approximately 10 days prior to your scheduled training date. The confirmation letter will include the course date/times, location and any equipment you may need to supply during the course of your training session. You will receive your course book the first class session. You must be on time for your class. You will not be allowed to participate in the class if you arrive late. You will not be given a refund.
