Robert DeVinney Endowed Teaching Chair

The second Endowed Teaching Chair is in tribute to and memory of Robert DeVinney, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Delta College from its beginning in 1961 until his retirement in 1991. Bob is remembered for his dedication to students and as an innovator both in and out of the classroom. Some of Bob's notable accomplishments include:

  • Winning the Bergstein Award for teaching excellence.
  • Helping Delta College to embrace the comprehensive community college concept during the 1960s as the leader of "The Summer Project." This project was referred to by former Delta College President Donald J. Carlyon as "the single most important event in the history of Delta College."
  • Leading the National Science Foundation funded CAUSE project to investigate instructional usage of computers in teaching subjects other than computer topics. The project's opportunity to do developmental work on the new "home computers" allowed Delta to become a leader in the use of microcomputers in instruction.

The Robert DeVinney Endowed Teaching Chair encourages faculty to pursue a professional development activity and/or project and related follow-up, which may include the development of new academic modules, infusion activities or service learning opportunities. The Robert DeVinney Endowed Teaching Chair awards a single grant of $5,000 per year. The award may be used for reimbursement of reasonable expenses (not taxable) associated with the professional activity/project and related follow-up or as a monetary award (taxable) or as some combination thereof.
