Don and Betty Carlyon Endowed Teaching Chair

The Carlyon Endowed Teaching Chair encourages faculty to pursue a professional activity/project and related follow-up which may include the development of new academic modules, infusion activities or service learning opportunities. The Carlyon Endowed Teaching Chair awards a single grant of $5,000 per year. The award may be used for reimbursement of reasonable expenses (not taxable) associated with the professional activity/project and related follow-up or as a monetary award (taxable) or as some combination thereof. Carlyon Endowed Teaching Chair Eligibility: All full-time Delta College faculty who have taught full-time for the College for at least three years.

The first Endowed Teaching Chair was funded by donations in tribute to our past president of 28 years, Donald J. Carlyon and his wife Betty. Over the years, some of the Carlyon's accomplishments bear repeating:

  • College chosen as "Island of Innovation" by Dr. B. Lamar Johnson, an architect of the national community college movement.
  • College selected as one of the best managed by the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges.
  • College recommended for unusual ten-year extension of accreditation by North Central Association which called Delta's self-study "a model for others."
  • College named charter member of the National League for Innovation in the Community College, the most prestigious organization for two-year colleges in the country.
  • College established the Office of Corporate Services which, in the span of three years, hired 40 technical instructors to handle training contracts with industry, primarily automotive. Today nearly 27,000 industry workers are trained on an annual basis through Delta's Corporate Services.
