Fall sports are winding down as soccer and volleyball are brining both their seasons to a close.  Volleyball has shown tremendous growth and development throughout the year even though their record might not display it. Their current record of 7-23 is an improvement from last year. With that said the Pioneer Volleyball team still has a mathematical chance to qualify for post season play. On Tuesday October 21st, if we defeat Henry Ford CC and Mott loses to Oakland CC there would be a tie for the last position between Delta and Mott, with Delta owning the tie breaker. So let's all cheer for the lady pioneers for success on Tuesday the 21st.

Coach Lana Sorokina and her assistant Katy Geyer have been on the recruiting trail evaluating talent that can compliment the players that will be returning next season. They both feel with a great off season program and bringing in a few talented players to go with the talented sophomores for next season the volleyball team will definitely be in a great position to compete for a conference title.

Coach "Ricco" Barassi has had a year of ups and downs, but has seen a very young team grow and mature.  Led by freshman Hugo Curmina who is ranked in the top 40 in the country in total points with 29. The Pioneers most likely will finish 3rd in the conference, one spot away from qualifying for the Region XII tournament hosted here at Delta College on November 1st and 2nd. Other players having outstanding seasons for the soccer program this year are Eric Vann with 19 total points and Danny Byrne with 14 total points. Defensively the Pioneers have had great goaltending by Jeremy Schermerhorn who is ranked 3rd in the region respectfully and 35th in country with a 1.707 goals against average. Two other defenders for the Pioneers the entire season have been freshman Cameron Thomson and Nate McManaman.

With the volleyball and soccer seasons coming to a close, we start heating up indoors with basketball. The Pioneer Athletic Department has announced that nine dates of basketball games will be broadcast on internet radio www.mrsn.us. The dates are available on the basketball schedule websites indicated with asterisks.

New Year of Athletics Begins (9/3/08)

With the start of the new year and classes beginning in early September, it's time for Soccer and Volleyball to begin.  Both sports officially started practice on August 1 and hit the ground or court running. Rodrigo "Ricco" Barassi has a new young core group of players joining his skilled and exciting veterans this year for what looks to be a very competitive season. The Soccer roster and schedule can be seen from the new athletics website at the following link: http://www.delta.edu/futurestudents/AthleticsandSports.aspx

Through the first week of classes and Soccer playing four games our record is 1 win and 3 losses.  The soccer team is showing progress through the early portion of the season with freshman Hugo Curmina scoring the two goals that our team has scored up to date.  Keep working hard boys, the wins will catch up with our talent soon.

Lana Sorokina has taken over the reigns of our Volleyball program and is looking to see great improvement and a new competitive fire with the young ladies who will be playing.  The Volleyball teams schedule and roster, which returns only 1 player from last season, can  be found through the following link as well:  http://www.delta.edu/futurestudents/AthleticsandSports.aspx.

With the first academic week of school being complete our Volleyball team has started the season with 3 wins and 5 losses  being on pace to complete the season with more wins than the previous year.  Looking good ladies.

Good luck to both teams and GO PIONEERS!!!!!!!!
