PPCT Spontaneous Knife Defense Instructor Training

The PPCT Spontaneous Knife Defense System is designed to meet the needs of students who are confronted by a spontaneous knife assault and unable to retrieve a weapon.  It is based upon a realistic, yet highly aggressive, check-and-stun philosophy that employs gross motor skills that are compatible with the affects of survival stress.  It reviews the fundamentals of basic knife systems; reviews the common grips, types of strokes, andlines of attack; and reviews defense strategies for both stalking assaults and spontaneous assaults inside the reactionary gap.

Course Goals:

  1. To examine survival learning research and design methods for spontaneous knife defense systems.
  2. To identify the primary and secondary methods of offensive knife strategies.
  3. To teach the PPCT Spontaneous Knife Defense System and training methodology.
  4. To refine student technique to the instructor level.
  5. To teach instructional methods designed to enhance a student's ability to learn survival techniques, increase his/her confidence level, and assist in the successful application of physical techniques.

Course Topics:

Use of Force Human Factors

This section examines survival stress research and provides students with information that will enhance their survivability in combative situations and recommendations regarding issues related to critical incident management.

Instructor Development and Training Protocols

This chapter reviews instructional methods designed to enhance a student's ability to learn survival techniques, increase his/her confidence level, and assist in the successful application of physical techniques.  Topics covered include the psychology of survival training, motivational factors for learning survival skills, the neural basis of learning, and the stimulus response training principle.  This chapter also introduces PPCT training protocols, including certification procedures, course protocols and registration requirements, and classroom safety concerns.

PPCT Control Principles

This section introduces the basic training principles that form the foundation on which all PPCT training systems are based.  Topics discussed include components of acceptability, the PPCT Resistance/Control Continuum, common types of resistance, principles of controlling resistive behavior, survival reaction time, the reactionary gap, and tactical positioning.

Principles of Edged Weapon Assaults

This section examines various philosophies regarding the tactical use of a knife as a leathal weapon.  It explores the historical perspectives of the evolution of combat knife systems, including the influence of the Sykes/Fairbairn World War I system, the influence of Filipino knife training, and the current view of military special operations units.

Vital Edged Weapon Targets

This section discusses facts about human incapacitation resulting from a knife attack, and examines the difference betwee fatal cuts and cuts that will immediately immobilize a subject.  This section also provides a foundation for the design methodology of the PPCT Spontaneous Knife Defense System.

Fundamentals of Knife Martial Arts

The effectiveness of any knife defense system is based on the student's knowledge of how a knife can be used offensively.  This section reviews the fundamentals of basic knife systems and includes an overview of common grips, types of strokes, and lines of attack.

PPCT Spontaneous Knife Defense System

This section introduces the PPCT Spontaneous Knife Defense System, based on a check, stun, and control principle that allows the student the option to disengage to cover or to follow-up for restraint and control.  Defense strategies for both stalking assaults and spontaneous assaults inside the reactionary gap are presented.

 Arresting Communication

Essential Interaction Skills for Law Enforcement & Corrections

Lt. Jim Glennon (ret.)     **LIFELINE Training Seminar

** Author:  “Arresting Communication: Essential Interaction Skills for LE”

                                                   Published by Calibre Press/PoliceOne

Arresting Communication is the complete package when it comes to realistic communication training for those in law enforcement.  The premise of the course is that every officer needs to be educated in what they do 100% of the time on duty – communicate.  This course looks at the profession from two perspectives:  physical safety and career success.

Designed for officers of any rank and assignment, Arresting Communication focuses on presenting students with simple yet realistic and effective techniques that are designed to improve both their verbal and nonverbal communication skills.  This course has three primary goals:

1.      Excel Within the Profession.  Whether dealing with victims, suspects, criminals, or fellow officers, law enforcement personnel must have the ability to communicate in order to succeed in all areas of the profession.

2.      Winning on the Street.  The vast majority of attacks on officers begin with the communication process.  To effectively win on the street officers must be proficient at understanding the words and reading the body of those determined to do harm.  Multiple case studies and videos of actual attacks on officers will be reviewed to better detect pre-attack indicators and deceptive behavior as well as enhance your ability to de-escalate any situation.

3.      Recognize and Correct Communication Weaknesses.  Increase productivity and minimize citizen complaintsUnderstanding what motivates people and utilizing that information to assist officers in recognizing their own weaknesses to immediately improve their communication styles.

 3-Day Use of Force Symposium

This TUITION-free program is being hosted by Delta College Public Safety and Training and presented by FLETC's Rural Policing Institute is being brought to Midland Michigan October 31 through November 2, 2011.

Program Focus: Everyday, law enforcement officers face danger while carrying out their responsibilites. When dealing with a dangerous or unpredictable situation, police officers usually have very little time to access it and determine a resonable response. Good training can enable the officer to react reasonably to the threat, while adhering to the Constitutional rights of the individual.

This Syposium brings in internationally recognized trainers from across North America to present on some of the most contemporary use of force topics. Each of the presenters is an experienced practitioner in their field, so this symposium is not founded upon academic hypothetical assessments of use of force, but rather a symposium presented by those who have a practical experience in the field.

Training Topics: (Topics are subject to change)

  • Legal Aspects of the Use of Force - Ms. Laura Scarry
  • Harnessing the Winning Mind and Warrior Mindset - Mr Brian Willis
  • Performance Under Extreme Stress - Dr. Alexis Artwohl
  • After the Fight: Self Applied First Aid - Lt. Eric Dickinson
  • Below 100 - Officer Safety/Reducing Line of Duty Deaths - Program Specialist John Bostain
