Basic Police Training Academy
Thank you for considering the Delta College Police Academy.
Our #1 goal is to provide our recruits with the necessary training, which meets or exceeds MCOLES standards, and assist in developing your knowledge and skills, forming the basis for a successful career in law enforcement.
We are proud to say that January, 2010 marks our 86th police academy, with our origins dating back to 1970. The 17-week training program is approved by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Persons completing our academy and passing the MCOLES State Examination are certifiable as police officers in Michigan. College students may use the academy to earn credits needed to complete their degree.
Recruits attending our academy will receive:
- 562 hours of MCOLES mandated instruction, plus
- additional training to become MCOLES certified radar/lidar operators, MCOLES certified PBT operators, and American Heart certified First Aid for First Responders and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, for a total of nearly 740 hours of instruction.
Our reputation is based on the highly qualified instructors we have who represent the FBI, ATF, Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR, as well as numerous city, county, and local township law enforcement agencies.
In order to secure your position in the 86th academy, your application must be completed by December 14, 2009. The sooner, the better as we must attain a minimum number of recruits by this deadline in order to offer the January 2010 training session. If you are seeking financial aid and/or a loan, you must have proper documentation outlining your approval amounts.
Recruits reporting to the Training Academy are strongly advised to begin physical training several months before the start of school. The academy recruit school is not the time or place to start developing basic physical fitness. Upon receipt of your completed application packet, contact our office to schedule a personal interview with the director or academy coordinator to assure you meet all the necessary requirements for acceptance into the academy. Call Dawn Jurik at (989) 686-9176 to schedule an appointment by December 11, 2009 as interviews must be conducted no later than December 14, 2009.
Late applicants or anyone not meeting these deadlines will have their eligibility to attend the academy determined on a case by case basis.
